Victoria Falls: the smoke that thunders
By Across The Wild · 2 April 2026
Everything you need to plan Africa's most spellbinding waterfall add-on.
Mosi-oa-Tunya - the smoke that thunders - is a natural wonder unlike any other on earth. Twice the height of Niagara and one and a half times as wide, Victoria Falls forms a spectacular curtain of water across the Zambezi River.
When to go: April to June for peak flow when the falls are at their most powerful. September to December for lower water and clearer views into the gorge - and the famous Devil's Pool swim on the Zambian side.
Zambia or Zimbabwe? Zimbabwe offers the classic panoramic views; Zambia gets you closer to the water. We recommend at least one full day on each side.
Combine with: Chobe National Park in Botswana for boat safaris and elephants, or with a Hwange add-on. Victoria Falls pairs beautifully as a finale to any East Africa journey.
Adventures: helicopter flip over the falls, white-water rafting the Zambezi, sunset river cruises, bungee jumping the bridge, or a walk with rhino on foot in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
